Description:

For sixteen-year-old Dan Crawford, New Hampshire College Prep is more than a summer program—it's a lifeline. An outcast at his high school, Dan is excited to finally make some friends in his last summer before college. But when he arrives at the program, Dan learns that his dorm for the summer used to be a sanatorium, more commonly known as an asylum. And not just any asylum—a last resort for the criminally insane.

As Dan and his new friends, Abby and Jordan, explore the hidden recesses of their creepy summer home, they soon discover it's no coincidence that the three of them ended up here. Because the asylum holds the key to a terrifying past. And there are some secrets that refuse to stay buried.

Featuring found photos of unsettling history and real abandoned asylums and filled with chilling mystery and page-turning suspense, Madeleine Roux's teen debut, Asylum, is a horror story that treads the line between genius and insanity.

My Review:

Dan Crawford enrolls at NHCP for the summer hoping to make new friendships and be in an environment where people actually want to learn. But when he arrives there he finds out that the dorm where he will be staying used to be an asylum. And here is where things start to get interesting. He finds a mysterious photo in his drawer that leads him to more mystery. Alongside his new friends Abby and Jordan, Dan finds himself exploring the hidden secrets of Brookline. What he finds might just be the key to his past.

The beginning of this book was fantastic. I was hooked from the start and I couldn't wait to find out what the plot was going to be. But as the book progressed I was a little disappointed. While the book was very enjoyable, it just wasn't scary enough for me. I did love the photos. It added that creepy vibe that I love, it went along nicely with the story. The problem was the anticipation in some scenes. The author would build up the tension nicely only to make the Main Character pass out. It just made the scene feel very anti-climatic. The writing was okay, the sorry moved along smoothly but it was too simple. The characters were a little annoying. I couldn't get into them. I liked them from a sort of detached way. I really loved the idea of the plot but I think it could have been executed better. It just felt lacking by the end of the book. After everything that happened I just kept wanting more. Something more concrete. I will continue with the series and hopefully the next on is better.

My rating: 3.5/5 stars.
