Sanctum Book Review

Tittle: Sanctum
Author: Madeleine Roux
Publishing Details: Published August 26th 2014 by HarperCollins
Genre: YA Horror, Paranormal/Thriller
Format: Paperback Copy
Pages: 343
Series: Asylum #2

Description:
In this haunting, fast-paced sequel to the New York Times bestselling photo-illustrated novel Asylum, three teens must unlock some long-buried secrets from the past before the past comes back to get them first. Featuring found photographs, many from real vintage carnivals, Sanctum is a mind-bending reading experience that blurs the lines between past and present, genius and insanity, perfect for fans of the smash hit Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Dan, Abby, and Jordan remain traumatized by the summer they shared in the Brookline asylum. Much as they'd love to move on, someone is determined to keep the terror alive, sending the teens photos of an old-timey carnival, with no note and no name. Forsaking their plan never to go back, the teens return to New Hampshire College under the guise of a weekend for prospective students, and there they realize that the carnival from the photos is not only real, it's here on campus, apparently for the first time in many years.

Sneaking away from sample classes and college parties, Dan and his friends lead a tour of their own—one through the abandoned houses and hidden places of the surrounding town. Camford is hiding a terrible past, and the influence of the asylum runs deeper than Dan ever imagined.

My Review:
Sanctum continues with Daniel Crawford and his two friends, Abby and Jordan as they make a journey back to NHCP to try and piece together the reason behind their bad dreams and hallucinations they have been having since leaving the college. Once they arrive there, they discover something much bigger than any of them could ever imagine.

I don't know where to start. I really wanted to love this book but sadly I didn't. I feel like this series had so much potential but it just lost control. I read and reviewed the first book Asylum, and while I didn't absolutely love it, I enjoyed it. I had high hopes that the second book would be better. But I was disappointed immediately once I began reading Sanctum. This book just dragged on so much for me. It took me so long to get through it. I had to force myself to get interested in it. Despite being long and boring, the story felt rushed. The plot derailed completely from what I thought would happen. The charm of the first book was the Asylum, Brookline. Because seriously, how creepy are Asylums!! But in Sanctum the gang goes back to the college campus however they barely give Brookline a glance. Instead they spend all their time trying to evade their tutors and running around visiting abandoned houses. Which could have been perfect scary material. But the author doesn't even elaborate or describe these houses. They go in, find a convenient clue and then leave. There are so many loose threads throughout this series. The plot is scattered and confusing. And the character were even more annoying and stupider than in the first book, if that is even possible. You don't learn anything else about them. The only thing I enjoyed were the photos. That's the only redeeming quality. I loved the mystery and creepiness of the photos. My overall opinion so far is that this series had cool photos, great covers but a horrible story.

My rating: 3 out of 5 stars.
